That’s one superb Skoda.

I'm sure you've *never* heard that one before.

No never.

Lol. I hear it about 40% of comments on the car.

Is this an A6 equivalent with a liftback?

Yes. It’s the immediate sister to the VW Passat which shares the same MQB platform and the VAG equivalent to the Audi A6 which doesn’t share the same platform though.

Like the Superb Mk2 of old, the Mk3 comes out way ahead of the Skoda Superb, VW Passat, Audi A6 and Bentley Flying Spur*.

(*the Flying Spur was tested against a Skoda Superb Mk2 in 2011, not put against the Mk3 as far as I’m aware yet).

I very much like liftbacks (“sportbacks”) but of course they’re not much of a thing here in the states...

Shame really.

I’ve seen with the Ford Fusion/Mondeo in the U.S. They don’t offer a wagon/estate but to take what looks and is a liftback/hatchback and make it a sedan/saloon is a crazy waste of time, money and R&D.

U.S. Fusion

U.K./Euro Mondeo.

Is there any chance that the ‘£0 cost option’ is a reference to James May’s rant about the 911's rear wiper option in TG Magazine a couple of years ago? In any other situation, I’d consider it too obscure to even ask, but, you know, it’s Oppo.

No. Sorry. It’s a £0 cost option as Skodas have pretty much always had rear wipers on their cars (like most if not all hatchbacks) but some of their cars have been hatchbacks with more saloon styling and saloons tend to almost always not have rear wipers as the air flow is very different over a hatchback than a saloon. So with the Mk3 they let the owners choose. If you were to have a wiper retrospectively fitted it would take a lot of work and certainly a lot of money but though it brakes up the design a little, it makes great sense for rear visibility. It’s a daily driver so ultimately needs to be practical more than anything else, she just happens to look fantastic doing so.

Haha, no matter. I totally agree about the visibility point; I always missed a rear wiper when we had our Volvo S40. May’s rant was somewhat similar by the way: he argued that a 911 is useless without a rear wiper, but Porsche was/is still asking a couple £100 for it.

Love your Superb by the way, I’ve been trying to convince my dad to get one as his next company car.

Putting a wiper on a Porsche for couple of £100 is probably the cheapest thing you can add to a Porsche.

Cheers mate.

Seriously get him to take one out for a spin. Piglet (the car’s name because of her licence plate) is a 1.4TSi ACT SE L Exec. A dream to drive more than plenty power and Skoda do an SE Business which falls in between SE and SE L Exec if he wants to go the company route but great deals can be found on the SE L Exec. We got ours for £21,000 after discount, etc... from £26,000 on a new build order.

Belgian here, so we’ve got other equipment levels and (plummeting) currency, but thanks for the tip! Did you test both the petrol and diesel by any chance?

He’s currently looking at crossovers and SUVs (grandparents got a new Q3, and he’s impressed), but will definitely try to get him to drive the Superb.

No. Didn’t test drive any Mk3 Superbs. Pulled into the Skoda dealership after owning a Mk2 Superb 1.4TSi S (base model) for two and a half years. Sat down got brought a latte, then said what car and spec we wanted (SE at the time) but was told we would get a loyalty £1,000 off and that they could give us an SE L Exec (which was £2,000 more than the SE) for the same price that we were looking at for the SE, I jokingly asked if they could take any more off and she said “£21,240 if you order today”, so w did. 30 minutes after walking in, we walked having placed an order and pai paid deposit.

Later in the year the Skoda Kodiaq comes out, bigger than the Yeti an the Skoda sister of the new VW Tiguan and newly released SEAT Ateca. It promises to be good. The SEAT will almost certainly be sportier but as all Skodas, the Skoda will be more practical and refined.
